Background Screening by HireRight

With our partner HireRigth, we propose 2 levels of Background screening services:

Basic Background Screening (level 1):

  • SSN Validation
  • National Sex Offender search
  • Widescreen Plus National Criminal Search

Enhanced Background Screening (level 2):

30$ + court fee surcharge*

  • SSN Validation
  • National Sex Offender search
  • Widescreen Plus National Criminal Search
  • County Criminal / Felony and Misdemeanor
* Court fee surcharges range from 2$ to approx. 69$ depending on the county. Please note that New York counties fees are up to 69$.

SSN Validation – This search is very successful in determining possible fraudulent use of a Social Security number (SSN). HireRight contacts the Social Security Administration (SSA) to perform the SSN Verification and obtain a result: SSN Matches, SSN Does Not Match, or SSN on Death Index.

National Sex Offender Search – The National Sex Offender Registry Search contains information from all states and U.S. Territories. Each individual state’s statutes drive what level of sex offender registry information is made available to the public. There are restrictions of use of sex offender registration information for employment purposes in California & Massachusetts, and legal approval is required.

Widescreen Plus National Criminal Search

  • Searches for criminal records across the United States including county criminal records, sex offender records and Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) records.
  • Leverages the results of more than 30 years of HireRight background checks.
  • Reveals criminal history information that may be found in locations beyond where the applicant has lived.
  • Only reports records validated at the original source.
County Criminal / Felony and Misdemeanor – This search checks for all felonies filed at the main courthouse (county seat) and for misdemeanor information available at the lower-level court filed at city location provided. Infractions and traffic violations are not included. The seriousness of the charge determines in which court a criminal action is filed. Examples of felony cases include grand theft, rape and murder. Examples of misdemeanor cases include trespassing, driving under the influence (DUI), possession of a controlled substance and petty theft. Response may include defendant, case number, file date, charges and disposition or current status. The check is performed at the county court where the candidate currently lives.

The background screening is only a database search, therefore it will only cover publicly available convictions and may not cover all arrests or foreign records. Not all databases may be up to date. In order to protect a tutor’s privacy, the results of a background screening are only reported to MyTutorSpeaksFrench on a pass/fail basis. Background screening are not a perfect safety solution and criminals may circumvent even the most sophisticated search technology. Please refer to our Tips for hiring a tutor and our Terms of use for more information.

Ordering a background screening

A background screening may be ordered by a Tutor or a Student. First, a tutor may elect to run a background screening on him or herself. Tutors are required to have a background screening if they want to teach children under 18. Second, a student may order a background screening on a tutor. When a background screening is ordered by a student, failure to provide consent on the part of the tutor will be taken as an indication that the tutor no longer wishes to find tutoring opportunities through MyTutorSpeaksFrench. The party ordering the service will be responsible for the related fees. A tutor will have a “pending” status while the background screening is processed and/or evaluated. Pending status means: 1) a background screening is being processed, 2) a background check has been completed, but the tutor is reviewing it and has the right to dispute its accuracy or completeness, or 3) the person has a pending arrest/charge or deferred adjudication. Regardless of the reason, if a person has had a pending status for 30 days, he or she will be removed from the website.

What happens after a passed background screening?

Upon notification of a successful background screening, MyTutorSpeaksFrench will post an icon on the tutor’s profile that details the date of the latest successful check. Students will be able to see this icon when choosing a tutor. Students and parents may also elect to run additional background checks at their own expense.

What happens after a failed background screening?

MyTutorSpeaksFrench will deactivate the profile of any tutor who does not pass a background screening or provide consent. Additionally, we will alert any students the tutor may have contacted while part of the MyTutorSpeaksFrench community that the tutor has not passed the background check requirements of the site. All disputes must be directed to HireRight at the contact information below: HireRight Customer Service Telephone: 866-521-6995 (Monday-Friday, 7am to 7pm Central Time) Fax: (918) 664-5520. In the event that a background screening is amended, MyTutorSpeaksFrench will reactivate the tutor’s profile and contact any former students upon notification from HireRight. Please note that submission of incorrect or incomplete personal information including a tutor’s name, alias, or Social Security number may lead to a failed background screening.
